Trees of Glory - Duber, Ethiopia

From Karen Wistrom - Sponsorship Coordinator at Trees of Glory

"Trees of Glory care-point is located 2 hours north of Addis in the beautiful Ethiopian countryside near the village of Duber.  The director of the care-point, Simret, used to have a government job which she left to follow her calling to provide and care for orphaned children.

Many of the children attending the care-point are orphaned or from destitute families.  Many of them had been sold as indentured servants to local livestock herders for $12 per year and did not even hope to attend school.  The government intervened and required these families to allow their children to attend the care-point.  Malnutrition and sickness were prevalent as the care-point was established, and many street orphans arrived to beg for help.  The predominant religion in the area is animist and witch-craft is also practiced in the surrounding villages.

Trees of Glory is now serving 100 children and 40 new children will be enrolling in September.  The children are thriving and the care-point also has a dormitory where many children live full-time.  Classrooms, a cafeteria, gardens, livestock and a kitchen are fully functioning, and we are currently fund-raising for a fresh-water well at this location."
